Background to Our School

St. Thomas More Catholic Primary School was opened in September 1975 by Father Tom Lane the then Parish Priest.  Mr. A. Beadle, the first Head Teacher and Mrs E. Cassidy, the first secretary, had been appointed the previous Easter and worked from an office in Arthur Dye School until the buildings were completed.  Two “Presentation Sisters” were appointed as the first members of staff.

The school originally had only four classrooms, with a capacity of 120 pupils.  By 1979 numbers had increased to such an extent that two additional classroom were added giving the school a capacity of 180.  As the reputation of St Thomas More Catholic Primary School continued to grow so did the demand for places and a further two classes were added in 1983.  By now the school was a one-form entry school with 210 places.

In 2010 Key Stage One was refurbished and a conference room was added.

In 2011 Key Stage Two was redesigned and refurbished with extra small teaching rooms created.  In addition all KS2 classrooms and assembly hall were decorated.

In 2016 there was a fire in the school hall which resulted in a partial closure of KS2 and the office area in the penultimate weeks of the school year. Since then building works completed to reveal a newly refurbished hall, library and office area. In addition to this an additional classroom was built for KS1.  In 2017 the school expanded further with a Pastoral Unit being built. 

Our School Buildings & Facilities

Since 2010, our school building has been completely refurbished, both inside and out. With the building entirely on one level, it is easily accessible for all. Our school facilities provide a comfortable environment for all our pupils where they can learn, play and be creative, both indoors and outside in our extensive grounds.

We have a spacious hall where collective worship, assemblies, P.E. and school productions are held. Our bright and airy classrooms all have interactive whiteboards, a classroom computer, broadband internet access and access to class sets of laptops and tablets. We also have a ‘Nurture’ Room in the Pre-School building to support children with social and emotional difficulties and a themed library area where our children are encouraged to enjoy reading books.

There are three playgrounds with separate facilities for KS1 and KS2 and our extensive playing fields, surrounding three sides of the buildings, provide space for a range of sports activities as well as an activity trail in both Key Stage 1 & 2 and a large sandpit.
